So it seems it’s very much ‘game on’ for this coming Wednesday, when Amazon’s Prime Day will apparently now be doing battle with perhaps its biggest and most powerful High Street nemesis. Yep, if the ultra-discounts of Amazon’s one-off event weren’t enough to have you splashing the cash, Walmart is about to unleash around 2,000 epic deals of its own which are likewise exclusive to web shoppers and for one day only.
Amazon’s even represents part of the online retail giant’s 20th birthday festivities – Walmart it appears has every intention of doing the unthinkable all over its rival’s birthday cake.
In terms of which of the two will come out on top, the fact that the specifics of the deals haven’t been announced yet makes it pretty tricky to call. Amazon for one has promised deals that will be “better than Black Friday” which is almost impossible to imagine being pulled off. And while it’s all a joyous and celebratory affair at Amazon, Walmart appears to be taking a more direct and aggressive stance toward the whole thing, having directly lashed out at its rival in a recent blog post.
“We’re standing up for our customers and everyone else who sees no rhyme or reason for paying a premium to save,” they wrote, clearly acknowledging the apparent beef they have with the way in which Amazon charges a subscription fee for Prime membership.
“We’ve heard some retailers are charging $100 to get access to a sale,” said Walmart CEO Fernando Madeira.
“But the idea of asking customers to pay extra in order to save money just doesn’t add up for us.”
